Automated Oil Facility Data Collection with FactoryTalk Historian SE and VantagePoint

FactoryTalk Historian Site Edition (SE)
Posted in HMI and SCADA, Manufacturing Automation and Intelligence, Oil and Gas Engineering

Summary

DMC successfully installed and commissioned FactoryTalk Historian SE (Site Edition) and FactoryTalk VantagePoint at a crude oil facility that needed months of data collected. This upgrade also replaced the facility’s manual report entry with an automated system that could e-mail the reports to the supervisors.

Solution

DMC’s client was managing crude oil delivery with a ControlLogix PLC and FactoryTalk View SE. The system gave them control of their entire facility, but they did not have historical records of the facility’s operating status. Their only record-keeping was done manually by operators recording a subset of data a few times every hour.

DMC installed FactoryTalk Historian SE on a separate server to allow for all of their relevant data to be recorded and stored for future access. DMC added trending screens to the FactoryTalk View application so that the data could be easily viewed.

FactoryTalk VantagePoint has an Excel tool that DMC used to import Historian data into an Excel template sheet that has the same format as the client’s batch reports. DMC set up VantagePoint to create the report once a day and e-mail a notification to the supervisors with the Excel report attached. The client can trust the accuracy of the data in the new report more than the previous manual entry because the data is coming straight from the Historian.
