The year was 1933. The men sported their suspenders and fedoras, and the women dressed in their fancy flapper attire. It was also the official ending of the very unpopular Prohibition era, and everyone was celebrating and imbibing whatever they could get their hands on.
The Last Speakeasy
Every year on the anniversary of the repeal of prohibition, the Chicago History Museum hosts the Last Speakeasy where attendees partake in an evening filled with dancing, (fake) gambling, and delicious libations. And you can bet that DMC was in attendance again this year.
The Last Speakeasy has become one of our annual events in the Chicago office that we attend using our Activity Fund. The DMC Activity Fund gives our employees a chance to take part in fun social events with co-workers that are funded by the company. It's a perfect opportunity to get to know your co-workers and have fun outside of the busy work life.
Fancy Cocktails
The night started with some tasty bites and drinks. The signature cocktails this year featured some classics -- the Manhattan and a Whisky Mule which included Old Forester Bourbon. The drinks were flowing as we took in the scenery. The atmosphere portrayed the 1930's so authentically that you would have thought we'd traveled back in a time machine.
Getting Glam
One of the best parts of the night was seeing everyone, especially my co-workers, all glammed up in their '30's attire. The Last Speakeasy is one of the few events that we have each year where everyone gets all gussied up.
As the night continued, we followed the sound of jazz music and made our way upstairs. There were gambling tables to lose faux money on, and magic shows to watch, not to mention lots and lots and lots of dancing! The jazz band even featured DMC's very own trombone player, Eric West!
None of us wanted the night to end. We were dancing the night away up until the very last song. All in all, it was another glorious celebration of the end of Prohibition. We are all counting down the days until we can go back in time again to the year 1933.
This event was, once again, a great way to bond with our colleagues in a setting very different from the office. We can't wait to celebrate the 86th anniversary of the Last Speakeasy next year!
