When you work for an ever-growing company, it can be hard to find time to get to know everyone you work with. In an effort to bring employees closer together (and to have fun), DMC supports employee-planned activities with a monthly activity fund for each of our six offices.
Chicago is a great city for planning these events. After DMC saw Cirque du Soleil's KURIOS: Cabinet of Curiosities several years ago, we decided to go back to the cirque. Each show is unique and amazing, full of talented artists and gorgeous makeup and costumes.
Let's Go to the Circus!
Cirque du Soleil's Luzia was billed as a "waking dream of Mexico", and it didn't disappoint with a slew of astonishing performances. We were dazzled by colorful birds diving through hoops and a Cyr wheel performance that made our heads spin as the performer used the wheel's momentum to execute a dance around a partner that twisted and spun above her.
It's always fun to see a performance under the big top of a circus tent.
There's something about wandering up to the surreal scene that is a Cirque du Soleil tent that suspends your disbelief and transports you to another place or time.
Our Favorite Feats
At one point, a contortionist broke my brain by bending himself into poses that didn't seem humanly possible. The agilest cats don't come close to what we saw - a man bent in half at the waist...backward.
The show was accompanied by some live music and singing - at times haunting and other times energetic and exciting. The vocalist joined a group of pole performers who left the audience gasping as they climbed and spun on the poles only to flip upside-down and let themselves slide to the ground. One performer got close so close in this death drop that his hair brushed the stage.
My favorite performance was the aerial straps. We watched as the ground opened up and a pool that was lit from within appeared on the floor.
As a giant tiger/lioness "puppet" circled this watering hole, the performer twisted and spun, telling a story that reminded me of Tarzan. It left the audience slack-jawed and, in some cases, just a little damp - the artist's long hair splashing water as he dipped into the pool and was lifted again high into the air.
DMC has lots of SWAG, but Cirque du Soleil had everything from butterfly finger puppets to cacti-shaped coffee mugs to intricate hand-made masks.
There was a quick intermission - just enough time to pick out a snack. There was cotton candy, popcorn, slushies, sour gummies, and more!
No one ran away to the circus, but I think a few of us considered it for a moment. It's a good thing DMC is such a great place to work!
