There are plenty of music lovers at DMC, including a mezzo soprano opera singer and our very own brass band. So when Pitchfork Music Festival came to town, several of us were excited to utilize DMC's activity fund and check out the festival in Chicago's Union Park.
We enjoyed a sunny summer day of musical performances on Saturday, July 20, and not even a bit of rain could dampen the fun of the closing sets. We're already looking forward to next year's festival, but until then enjoy our favorite moments from Pitchfork 2013!
Seeing Belle and Sebastian for the first time was my Pitchfork highlight. They have been one of my favorite bands for over ten years and finally getting to see them play in person just made my night. - Jon Carson
Going to Pitchfork is like visiting a tiny village of people who don’t care about anything but music, food, art, and booze. I love just sitting around in the sun and watching different people do their own thing. I also love to watch bands like Savages perform because you get to see how genuine their sound is. They aren’t faking anything. - Courtney Mitchell
I liked watching hipsters get down to Solange’s funky sounds. Goose Island beers are the best too! - Eric West
With an eclectic lineup and lovely venue, Pitchfork is my favorite summer festival. My top sets this year included Mac DeMarco, Parquet Courts, Savages, Autre Ne Veut, and Toro y Moi. However, the most memorable act was closing out Sunday night with R. Kelly. Kells performed a medley of 38 hits in just over an hour with a dazzling display of showmanship that included a crystal-studded mic, full gospel choir, and the release of dove-shaped balloons into the Chicago night sky. - Jessica Mlinaric
I've been a fan of The Breeders for many years, so seeing them perform live was my highlight. I also had a blast playing in the water spray fans to cool off! - Amanda Richwalski
As a music junkie of all genres, I was particularly excited to experience Pitchfork with DMC. This was my first real music festival so I spent much of the time just taking in the spectacle of the event (the people watching opportunities were incredible!). My favorite musical act was Savages. Their sound grabbed me and practically demanded that I stop in my tracks so I could really listen to them. I heard rock & roll roots in their music but also a forward-thinking sound at the same time. I was an instant fan, and will definitely keep up with their music. Even better than all this was spending some time with my fellow DMCers, having a beer on a perfect summer day and getting to know them better. - Kathryn Wills
